| The
Ford Model T used a 177 in³ (2.9 L) 4 cylinder engine
producing 20 hp (15 kW) for a top speed of 45 mph (72
km/h). The engine had side valves and 3 main bearings
and was built in tandem with the Model T's novel
transmission, sharing the same lubricating oil.
Engine bore was 3¾
inches (95.2 mm) and stroke was 4 inches even
(101.6 mm) for a total displacement of 2.9 L
(2896 cc / 177 in³).
Our engine has a VIN
number of 9779026.
That means that the engine was manufactured in April of
1924. During that month 191,999 engines were produced.
The pictures on the right
show our newly overhauled engine sitting in the frame,
ready to have the fuel, electrical and water connections
made.
The engine overhaul
included the 'long' block - the transmission and the
engine. It also included rebuilding the carburetor,
starter and generator. To our good fortune there was no
major internal damage or cracking. We replaced worn
parts including transmission gears and bands.
You can see on the
picture to the right that we added a non standard copper
oil line to direct oil from the rear of the engine to
the front bearing which is always under lubricated.
We'll need to remove this for any national judging as it
is a non stock alteration. |
