The
Transition
Tin Lizzie was the nickname
for the Model-T Ford. Lizzie is short for Elizabeth, a
common name for horses at the time. To people who had
never seen anything like it, the Model-T was a
"metal horse.
Here is a rather ironic
photo of a 1924 Ford Model T Touring 'Tin Lizzie,'
identical to the one I restored stopped besides a farm
house while two men speak to the driver. One holds the
bridle of a horse not realizing that Henry Ford's
automobile will reduce horseback riding to a sport in a
few short years instead of the necessity it was.
A close examination of
the enlarged picture shows no embellishment to the car.
In 1924 it was delivered in black, with black spoke
wheels and no chrome to shine or brass to polish. It
just had brushed nickel hubcaps and black painted spoke
wheels. The license plate in the photo is a
Massachusetts issue. The kerosene side lights were
standard on a non starter car, though they could be
ordered as an accessory.
